If you've been reading the reviews on this book blog of mine, then you might have seen that Macky has already shared his thoughts on The Girl Who Drank the Moon a couple of months ago. He loved it, in case you were wondering. In fact, he loved it so much that he wound up bringing a copy home for me as a gift when he went to Texas on a business trip. I've meant to read it ever since, but it was finally last month's category for our Picky Pledge Reading Challenge - a book you were gifted - that prompted me to pick it up.
And, just like Macky promised, it was spectacular! The Girl Who Drank the Moon is about a couple of key characters - a grandmotherly witch, a bright and magical girl, a tiny dragon, a swamp monster, a madwoman and a boy with good intentions - and how their stories intertwine after a series of unexpected events in each of their lives. It reads just like a fairytale, with the absurd fanciful goings-on and the creative use of magic to explore a variety of themes in these characters' lives. It started off slow for me, truth be told, and I was almost fearful of not enjoying this one as much as Macky did. Thank goodness that quickly changed, and I found myself fully invested in discovering just where Barnhill was going to take this story.
It's unexpected. It's odd. It's funny. It's heartfelt. The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a children's book that falls on the darker side of the spectrum when it comes to theme, but that handles those things beautifully and with an ending that is utterly satisfying. It's the kind of middle grade that adults will also get something out of when they read it, and I would certainly recommend checking it out for yourself.

This is my eighth read for this year's Picky Pledge Reading Challenge! Apart from sharing our review every month for the book we read, Hannah and I are also answering a couple of questions.
1) How long has this book been on your TBR? It hasn't been on there very long since I added this one to my TBR, as Macky brought it back from his trip in the middle of June. So, it's been a couple of months!
2) Who gave you this book? I already mentioned this earlier, but Macky did!
3) Do you know (or have a guess) why they chose the book for you? Macky loved this book, and he thought that I would love it too! It was partly because he already wanted to have it on our shelves and partly because he knows how much I adore fairytale-type reads.
