Leah Westfall has traveled across the country, enduring all the tragedies and triumphs of the pioneer life. In Like a River Glorious, she has finally arrived in California and settled in with her friends, all of them determined to make their fortunes and find prosperity in the Gold Rush. With Leah’s special affinity for finding gold, their small settlement starts to prosper – and that eventually leads to Leah’s selfish Uncle Hiram discovering her location. In a story of kidnapping and sabotage, revenge and revelation, Leah is determined to stand up to her uncle once and for all and to save her friends – no matter what the cost.
I really liked Like a River Glorious! Reading the second novel in a series generally makes me nervous, as I usually have formed expectations for it after finishing the first. Thankfully, this book did not disappoint at all. I was thoroughly impressed by Carson’s storytelling, as the events in this chapter of Leah’s life unfolded beautifully and organically. It was nearly impossible to stop reading once I’d started, simply because I had to know what would happen next! I also appreciated, yet again, the attention to detail that Carson has. She integrates new elements of the pioneer life, as well as mining settlements, into her story, and it really gave me a strong sense of the time and place I was reading about. And, of course, I still had so much love for the entire cast of characters, both familiar and new, as Carson really does succeed in making them very distinctive personalities that pop off the page. All in all, Carson can definitely say she’s got another excellent installment in this series under her belt, and I am so looking forward to whatever is going to happen in the third and final book of this trilogy.

After a harrowing journey across the country, Leah Westfall and her friends have finally arrived in California and are ready to make their fortunes in the Gold Rush. Lee has a special advantage over the other new arrivals in California—she has the ability to sense gold, a secret known only by her handsome best friend Jefferson and her murdering uncle Hiram.
Lee and her friends have the chance to be the most prosperous settlers in California, but Hiram hasn’t given up trying to control Lee and her power. Sabotage and kidnapping are the least of what he’ll do to make sure Lee is his own. His mine is the deepest and darkest in the territory, and there Lee learns the full extent of her magical gift, the worst of her uncle, and the true strength of her friendships. To save everyone, she vows to destroy her uncle and the empire he is building—even at the cost of her own freedom.
The second epic historical fantasy in the Gold Seer trilogy by Rae Carson, the acclaimed author of The Girl of Fire and Thorns.
