Build-A-Character

We've chatted about villains, and we've picked out our sidekicks, so today, it's time to play build a character! The hero/heroine of a fantasy novel is usually a big deal-breaker, as my feelings towards a story are gravely affected by this character. The fantasies I've loved often feature characters that are warriors with a great sense of vulnerability, but even more importantly, the characters I've loved are always flawed. Their imperfections make them real to me as a reader, and I've always loved that. So today, Hannah & I are "building" our ideal character!

What would be your defining trait?

Oh man. This is a really hard question because there are so many great character traits I could and would want to pick: ferocity (like Celaena), stubbornness (like Alanna), peacemaker (like Sandry) and many more. But I suppose I would most like to be known for my cleverness, like Hermione Granger. (first appearance: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling)

What would be your weakness?

This is actually a surprising choice, to me, but I would say being overly sentimental (whether about people or things). A character who I think does sort of have this weakness is Anne Shirley, who often loses herself in daydreams and imaginings, getting completely overwhelmed with emotion. (first appearance: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery)

What would your special ability be?

I think I'd best like to have a magical ability, just because I can. So, I would say that I would want to have the elemental powers that Iolanthe Seabourne possesses. I'd be able to wield all of the elements, and how awesome would that be? (first appearance: The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas)

  1. Defining trait is duty/responsibility, I always love that. Weakness is loyalty. Special ability is compulsion. Mk, so that is kinda a lot like Keenan from Wicked Lovely... but still... ;)

Love your choice of cleverness too.
