Happy Friday, everyone!
Today is an extra special day: my mom and dad are celebrating their 27th wedding anniversary! (Happy anniversary, parents! I love you both. Thank you for being such a strong source of support and inspiration!)

Though I've already greeted them multiple times on various platforms, I figured it would be fun to do an extra special blog post in their honor. Since I think my parents are pretty amazing, I wanted to find examples of parents who are just as awesome in books!
In any person's life, parents (however involved they may be) are a fact. They are the ones who conceive you, birth you, rear you, teach you, guide you, encourage you and provide a constant source of love and support. Sure, there will be times when you guys don't agree. Sure, your parents are only human and so, won't always make the best decisions. But in the end, parents will be a constant in one's life -- no matter what, whether you’ve got the conventional mom-and-dad or something a little different.
With help from my friends Rachel, Estelle, Judith, Racquel and Sharon, I've come up with this short list of reads to share with you today:
Mr. and Mrs. Weasley (Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling)
Ma and Pa (Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder)
Clem's parents (Unbreak My Heart by Melissa Walker)
Mr. and Mrs. Garrett (My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick) (Sharon, Rachel & Judith agree!)
Lola's dads (Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins) (Sharon & Racquel agree!)
Dee's parents (Open Road Summer by Emery Lord) (Judith & Rachel agree!)
Mia's parents (If I Stay by Gayle Forman) (Judith agrees!)
A few other suggestions I have yet to read:
the parents in Audrey, Wait (by Robin Benway) (recommended by Rachel, Racquel, Sharon)
Carey's dad and stepmom (If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch) (recommended by Judith)
Bonus: Here are a few more suggestions by way of Magan & Estelle’s post about the best families in contemporary YA!
YOUR TURN – What are books (any genre or classification) that feature great parents in them?
Awww happy anniversary to your wonderful parents, Alexa! My favourite literary parents will always, always be the surrogate parents for Harry Potter - especially Sirius Black :)
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary to your parents! I love the parents in LITTLE HOUSE & HP! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMaligayang anibersaryo sa iyong mga magulang!! I hope I got that right... Tagalog isn't my first language!!)
ReplyDeleteAwww happy anniversary to your parents! :) Ooo I can't think of any but I definitely agree with Judith that Carey's dad and stepmum were great parents!
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS SPECTACULAR!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this!
There are so many books out there with crappy parents, so it's nice to have a few of the good ones highlighted!
Happy anniversary to your parents! They look like great people, and that pic is too funny. And yes, the Weasleys are amazing, and I also really enjoyed the family dynamic in My Life Next Door. Excited about the next one coming out!
ReplyDeleteThis is so sweet, Alexa! Happy anniversary to your parents *throws annoying confetti* I haven't read most of your examples, which I need to remedy asap. I always loved Hazel's parents in The Fault in Our Stars and the parents in The Lonely Hearts Club by Elizabeth Eulberg. Oh, and the family dynamic in Better Off Friends!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable photo! And I love how you used such a great occasion to let it inspire you :)
ReplyDeleteI love the family dynamic of the Merrick brothers in Brigid Kemmerer's Elemental series. I'm trying to think of some great parents, but I'm coming up blank. I'll have to check out the ones on your list - I don't think I've read any of them!
