I'm sure many of my readers are already aware that I absolutely loved debut novel The Bone Season by the amazing Samantha Shannon. In fact, just reading this first line of my review might be enough to convince you to check it out: "The Bone Season is extremely difficult to review without devolving into gushing." I gushed a whole lot more about it, which is easy enough to do when it completely consumed me as I read it.
I feel extremely privileged to be a part of the blog tour. Today, I've decided to share with you ten reasons you should read The Bone Season:
1. Paige Mahoney - Our heroine Paige is pretty kick-ass, and not just because she can put up a good fight. Our girl has got a strong sense of right and wrong, and just enough courage to fight for what she believes in. While there are many things we don't know for sure about her abilities, she's still pretty damn cool.
2. Warden - O.M.G. Someone needs to hand me an industrial-strength fan because I thought Warden was the hottest thing ever. He caught my attention from this first moment he appeared. As the story goes on, he really won me over just by being who he is. I dare you not to fall for him as much as I did!
3. Seven Seals - This renegade group of voyants is pretty darn awesome. While they could use a little work on their group dynamics, I do think that their powers combined (Captain Planet reference, anyone?) they make a very strong team indeed.
4. London - I am a bit of an Anglophile, so clearly, I was very excited that this book was going to be set partly in London. Sure, it's an alternate London, but still, it's London. And plus, not only do we get London in the mix, we also get Oxford. How cool is that?
5. Voyants - How interesting is it that there are so many different kinds of voyants? There's an entire chart of them in the front of the book that had me positively intrigued by the hierarchy, and definitions. I learned quite a bit in this first book, but I'm sure there's so much more ahead.
6. Rephaim - This race of creatures was utterly confusing and intriguing. But overall, they felt really... dark. There's still something alluring about them though, so I definitely couldn't avoid being drawn into reading about them and just wondering what they were all about.
7. Writing style - I just love the way that the book is written. The world-building is intelligently done, the plot just unfurls with perfect precision and even the vocabulary used is intelligent and thoughtful. Samantha Shannon took a lot of care in writing this novel, and it shows.
8. Story - I did mention the plot, yes? Because it's freaking fantastic. While the early chapters focus on setting up the world and characters for the reader, the rest of the novel comes into its own when it comes to the story. So many things happen, but all of them are relevant and thrilling and just really, generally awesome. It's so gripping, and I couldn't put the book down once I'd started.
9. Friendships + Villains - I won't go into detail about other characters in this book, but I will say this though: there are lots of friendships to root for, and villains to hate. It's seriously such a creative combination of characters and their ties to one another!
10. Warden. And yes, he deserves to be repeated on this list. Just try and deny his appeal, why don't you, and we'll have to have words. Yes, he's that amazing.
These are my ten reasons for you to check out The Bone Season. It's certainly a book that I fully endorse, and one that I expect quite a few people to enjoy. Don't be intimidated by the slow start -- I promise that it gets good. Please check out the book! And don't forget to check out the rest of the tour stops too.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Times a million! Everything you said is everything I loved about this book! Warden...that is all... :)
ReplyDeleteIf I wasn't already planning on reading this, you would have convinced me, hun!
ReplyDeleteI'm already flipping excited about this book, but I have to wait in order to get more books :p I'd already bought too much this month, haha. But this would have convinced me to buy it if I wasn't excited in the first place :D

ReplyDeleteI totally and completely agree with this list!!! Especially the part where you list Warden twice ;)
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I'm kind of nervous about reading this one. I've already bought it, but I just haven't worked up the courage yet. But you've definitely got me more excited about diving in!
ReplyDeleteStop it! You're making me too excited!!! I still need to read this one but I have heard so many good things about it! EEEEP.
ReplyDeleteI'm still on the fence on this one. I keep hearing lots of love for this book (like this review) but others saying that it's really confusing?
