Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.
Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures. So much for normal.
Just when I thought that I was tiring of reading about paranormal creatures, I read PARANORMALCY by KIERSTEN WHITE. The biggest surprise of all - there's fae involved in this book and I still loved it. (If you've been following me for a while, you'll know that I haven't actually read a fae/faery/fairy book that I really like - until now, of course.)
If there is one thing that I particularly loved about PARANORMALCY, it has to be the main character herself - Evie. I have so much affection for Evie. I absolutely adore just about every single thing about her - her penchant for pink and glitter, her snarky & witty remarks, her intelligence and intuition, her butt-kicking abilities and of course, the fact that she's still very much a teenage girl, even though she does work for an agency that identifies and contains paranormal creatures.
This book is definitely a departure from most of the darker paranormal novels out there. There's a lighter tone to it (though there are still bad things that happen, trust me) that makes it an easier read than most. It's enjoyable, it's funny and I just think there's something a little magical about it (and not just because of the events that transpire within its pages).
I'm very intrigued by the last third of the book. A lot of things were revealed, and I'm definitely curious to see how KIERSTEN WHITE will choose to play things, especially with regards to the prophecy and Evie's abilities. PARANORMALCY definitely left me with a lot of questions, and I'm pretty sure that I'll be picking up the next book in this series.

I've heard of this series but funny enough, I don't think I've ever actually read a review of it? Evie sounds like a character I would love, she's witty AND she likes glitter & pink? My kind of heroine! This sounds like such a fun book! :)
ReplyDeleteI have heard good things about this book, so I guess I really need to get myself a copy, don't I? Great review!
ReplyDeleteShe's snarky and hilarious and I just thought she was funny!
ReplyDeleteTeehee, wasn't this so much fun!? I love Evie's spunk and the overall amusing personality of the book. Great review, Alexa!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy I already own this one!! :) I love it when the main character is awesome and intelligent, snarky girls are the best ones in my opinion! :) Also, YAY! I haven't been doing so well with fae books either, so I'm glad you say that even though you're not so into fae, you still liked it :)
ReplyDeleteThe way her voice comes across is hilarious. She and I make a perfect fit ;)
ReplyDeleteI did! The fae bit isn't too much, I promise. And Evie's personality totally makes up for it!
ReplyDeleteOh man I love Kiersten and her books! I cannot wait to see what she has in store for Evie in the third book! Glad you liked this one :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not big on paranormal - and am definitely a skeptic about fae - but this has been recommended to me as one that I could get into. And after your review, I think I'm going to give it a chance! I've met Kiersten before since she's a local author and she's super sweet and spunky, so I can imagine how it comes across in her books. I'm very glad you say that it's a bit of a "lighter" paranormal when reading, because I think that's one of my issues with paranormal: it always seems so dark, serious, sinister and heavy to read. Thanks for a great review!
